Dr. S.Balachandra Rao, M.Sc., Ph.D., is Hon. Director, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Gandhi Centre of Science and Human Values. He retired as Principal and Professor of Mathematics from the National College, Bangalore after 35 years of teaching under-graduate and post-graduate students and guiding Ph.D. candidates.
Dr. Rao is Hon. Professor at the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) and former Member of the Research Council of the National Commission for History of Science. Dr. Rao is a former Member of the Editorial Board of Indian Journal of History of Science, INSA. New Delhi.
Dr. Rao has been working on research projects in Indian Astronomy under Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi, since 1993. He has authored over 20 books including popular ones, like: (1) Indian Mathematics and Astronomy-Some Landmarks; (2) Indian Astronomy-An Introduction; (3) Ancient Indian Astronomy-Planetary Positions and Eclipses-with Programs; (4) Aryabhata 1 and His Astronomy & (5) Bhaskara 1 and His Astronomy; (6) Indian Astronomy- A Primer. Dr. Rao presented an invited paper on “Copernicus, Nilakantha Somayaji and Ganesha Daivajna - A comparative Study” in the science section of the 13th World Sanskrit Conference held at Edinburgh, Scotland in July 2006.
Dr. Rao has contributed several articles to the Encyclopaedia of Hinduism, to be published by South Carolina University, USA. In the latest volume “Science in India” edited by Prof. J.V. Narlikar, two of his articles have appeared.
Dr. Rao is currently also the Editor of the volume on Mathematics and Astronomy of the Encyclopedia of Indian Sciences under preparation by the Mythic Society, Bengaluru.
